Round 6 Feature Match: Sebastian Gonzalez vs Abid Arshad
July 17th, 2010 - 19:02

Sebastian Gonzalez is the 2010 Belgian National Champion while Abid Arshad is a local favourite from the UK, finishing in the Top 8 of the UK National Championship this year. Both of these Duelists are undefeated heading into this round. Gonzalez is hoping to make it 2 World Championship appearances in a row, after travelling to Tokyo for last year’s event.

Gonzalez won the die roll and chose to go first. He Set a monster, and then a back row card, ending his turn.

Arshad Set Ronintoadin and a Spell/Trap of his own before passing.

Gonzalez Set another back row card.

Arshad activated Soul Exchange,Tributing Ronintoadin and Gonzalez’s XX-Saber Darksoul to Summon Light and Darkness Dragon. Darksoul’s effect was triggered and Light and Darkness tried to negate it. Gonzalez chained Book of Moon to the activation of Light and Darkness Dragon’s effect and it went face-down, allowing Gonzalez to add to add X-Saber Airbellum to his hand with Darksoul’s effect in the End Phase.

Gonzalez drew and flipped Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Arshad’s Set Spiritual Water Art – Aoi. He summoned Rescue Cat, brought out X-Saber Airbellum and XX-Saber Darksoul with its effect, and Synchro Summoned Goyo Guardian. Goyo destroyed Arshad’s face-down Light and Darkness Dragon in battle and Arshad Special Summoned Ronintoadin in Defence Position. Gonzalez added XX-Saber Faultroll to his hand in the End Phase through Darksoul’s effect.

Arshad Tributed Ronintoadin for Caius the Shadow Monarch, removing Goyo Guardian from play. Caius then attacked and Gonzalez was on 5600 Life Points.

Gonzalez Summoned X-Saber Airbellum set Gottoms’ Emergency Call, ending his turn with no further plays.

Arshad drew Light and Darkness Dragon, adding it to his hand of Raiza the Storm Monarch, D.D. Crow and Battle Fader. Caius attacked Airbellum and Gonzalez fliped Gottoms’ Emergency Call, targeting the 2 XX-Saber Darksouls in his Graveyard. Arshad removed one of them from play with D.D. Crow, preventing Gonzalez from Summoning the other copy. Airbellum went down in battle, and Gonzalez lost another 800 Life Points. Arshad ended his turn.

Gonzalez Set 2 Spells and Traps on his turn.

Arshad attacked with Caius the Shadow Monarch again. In Main Phase 2 he Tributed Caius to Summon Raiza the Storm Monarch, but Gonzalez destroyed it with the targeted card, Torrential Tribute.

Gonzalez passed his turn.

Arshad drew Treeborn Frog and Set it.

Gonzalez passed again, clearly not happy with the cards he is drawing.

Arshad Summoned Substitoad, Tributing his face-down Treeborn Frog to Summon Swap Frog from his Deck. Arshad’s second Treeborn Frog is sent to the Graveyard with Swap Frog’s effect. Swap Frog is then Tributed for Substitoad to Summon another copy, sending another Substitoad to the Graveyard. Substitoad itself is then Tributed for Arshad’s third copy of Swap Frog, sending his final copy of Substitoad from his Deck to the Graveyard. Both of Arshad’s Swap Frogs attacked Gonzalez directly, reducing him to 400 Life Points. Arshad then returned both copies of Swap frog to his hand before ending his turn.

Gonzalez Set another back row and a monster on his turn.

Arshad drew Brain Control, adding it to his hand of Light and Darkness Dragon, 2 Battle Faders, and 2 Swap Frogs. Treeborn Frog is Summoned during Arshad’s Standby Phase and Arshad tried to Special Summon Ronintoadin from his Graveyard in his Main Phase, but lost it to Gonzalez’s D.D. Crow. After a quick check of his Graveyard, Arshad Normal Summoned Swap Frog, sending his Treeborn Frog from his field to the Graveyard. Swap Frog is then returned to Arshad’s hand.

Gonzalez drew and Flip Summoned XX-Saber Darksoul. He Normal Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight, and then Special Summoned XX-Saber Faultroll! Fulhelmknight declared an attack, but Arshad Summoned Battle Fader, ending the Battle Phase. Gonzalez Summoned another Darksoul with Faultroll’s effect in Defence Position, and Tuned his Attack Position copy with his Fulhelmknight to Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. Gonzalez discarded Brain Control, targeting Battle Fader and removing it from play. In the End Phase he added another copy of XX-Saber Faultroll to his hand.

Arshad brought back Treeborn Frog in his Standby Phase and played Brain Control on Brionac. Gonzalez Chained Book of Moon so that he could keep his monster. Arshad then Special Summoned Swap Frog by discarding his other copy, Tributed both of his monsters for Light and Darkness Dragon, and attacked for the win in game 1!

Abid Arshad, from the UK playing Frog Monarchs.

Gonzalez chose to start Duel 2 and immediately Summoned XX-Saber Boggart Knight, X-Saber Airbellum, and XX-Saber Faultroll! He Synchro Summoned X-Saber Urbellum by using his 2 smaller monsters, and brought back Airbellum with Faultroll’s effect. He Synchro Summoned XX-Saber Gottoms next, and Tributed Urbellum to discard Ronintoadin from Arshad’s hand. Gonzalez Set Gottoms’ Emergency Call before ending his turn.

Arshad drew, and played Soul Exchange, targeting Gottoms. Gonzalez chained his Emergency Call to Special Summon X-Saber Urbellum and X-Saber Airbellum. Arshad then activated Enemy Controller, Tributing Gottoms to take control of Urbellum, which he Tributed right away for Raiza the Storm Monarch, sending Airbellum to the top of Gonzalez’s Deck. Arshad couldn’t attack due to Soul Exchange and ended his turn.

Gonzalez drew the Airbellum that Raiza sent back and Set a monster.

Arshad drew Substitoad, summoned it, and Tributed it to Special Summon Swap Frog, which sent Treeborn Frog to the Graveyard. Swap Frog attacked Gonzalez’s face-down XX-Saber Emmersblade, and Gonzalez Summoned another copy from his Deck. Arshad completed his turn by returning Swap Frog to his hand.

Gonzalez drew, considered his options, and Summoned Airbellum, Tuning it with Emmersblade for Goyo Guardian. Goyo attacked Arshad’s Raiza the Storm Monarch, which was Summoned to Gonzalez’s side of the field in Defence Position.

Arshad drew, tried to Special Summon Treeborn Frog but Gonzalez removed it from play with D.D. Crow. Arshad played Burial from a Different Dimension in his Standby Phase to return Treeborn Frog to the Graveyard to Special Summon it. He Tributed it for Caius the Shadow Monarch, removed Goyo Guardian from play, and destroyed Raiza in battle.

Gonzalez drew and Set a monster.

Arshad Normal Summoned Swap Frog to send another Swap Frog to the Graveyard. Swap Frog attacked Gonzalez’s Set Darksoul, and Raiza attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, Arshad returned Caius to his hand with Swap Frog and Set Torrential Tribute. Gonzalez added X-Saber Airbellum to his hand in the End Phase.

Gonzalez drew, Normal Summoned XX-Saber Boggart Knight and Special Summoned Airbellum, only to lose his field to Torrential Tribute. He ended his turn.

Arshad drew Enemy Controller and passed.

Gonzalez passed with.

Arshad drew, Special Summoned Treeborn Frog and Tributed it to Summon Vanity’s Fiend. He attacked for 2400 putting Gonzalez on 2800 Life Points.

Gonzalez Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight and passed.

Arshad draws Brain Control and plays it to win the Match 2-0!

Sebastian Gonzalez, the 2010 Belgian National Champion, playing X-Sabers.
